Labour Party Chair, Ian Lavery MP, has branded the prospective Tory plans to raise the pensionable age to 75 as “disgraceful” and has raised concerns about the already growing disparity of life expectancy between working-class communities in the North and wealthier southern areas.

Speaking after the plans were released by Ian Duncan Smith’s organisation; the Centre for Social Justice, Mr Lavery said;

“If the pensionable age is pushed up to 75 as Boris Johnson and the Tories want to do, then the vast vast majority of people in constituencies like mine here in Northumberland will never get a penny. Statistics, like those laid out in this article (see link below) from last year, show us that the majority of my constituents will have already died before claiming their pension.”

“This is just another reminder of the gaping chasm of inequality that exists between Northern & Working Class communities and the rest of the country. The Tories really are disgustingly, unashamedly cruel, aren’t they.”
