Following England’s recent success at the Cricket World Cup, local MP Ian Lavery has joined with voices from across Northumberland in praising Ashington-born and bred cricketer Mark Wood on being part of the victorious squad.

Speaking after the successful team had visited Downing Street, Lavery, himself an avid fan of cricket, had welcomed what he called “Ashington’s latest international victory”. He said: “Mark’s marvellous contribution to the team that won this historic victory for England has shown yet again, just how many sporting successes our local area has been part of, thanks to the determination and talent of our local players – from football to cricket!”

Famously, Ashington has hosted celebrations of world cup Football heroes Bobby and Jackie Charlton after their world cup win in 1966.
