Northumberland MP and Chair of the Labour Party Ian Lavery has given his backing to a petition started by the Northumberland Labour Group calling on Northumberland County Council’s Conservative Administration to secure the re-opening of rail services to South East Northumberland. The scheme previously referred to as the Ashington, Blyth and Tyne Line came under threat when the Tories took control of the council in 2017, along with scrapping key investment projects in communities across the county. Now there are concerns that areas which were promised transport hubs and stations as part of the rail re-opening investment will be abandoned by the Tories.

Mr Lavery said; “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity which I have campaigned for since first being elected and as a councillor for many years before that. We cannot simply ignore areas that the Tories seem to think do not deserve investment, often the areas that require it the most. Please sign and share this petition and ensure that we secure the future of this project and stop the Conservative’s from rolling back the commitments made to our communities.”
