Last week saw the Prime Minister finally ousted by his party as senior members of the cabinet starting with Javid and Sunak finally drew the line and pulled out their long knives.

Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minister was a disaster. Despite having a huge majority to work with he refused to implement any policies that might actually improve the lives of people up and down the country, instead presiding over a public health catastrophe and eventually a cost of living crisis that will only get worse and worse.

This is yet another chapter in what is now the 12th year of Conservative rule that has seen a decade of brutal austerity, public services cut to the bone, NHS waiting times through the roof, poverty levels skyrocketing and now inflation at record highs.

Despite this, the new batch of Conservative candidates going for the leadership will no doubt claim that they will bring a fresh start, that they have had nothing to do with the misery of the past 12 years.

But we should remember that these are the same people who have been propping up Boris Johnson for years despite the tsunami of scandals from corruption charges to sexual assault coverups, and have been enthusiastically behind the managed decline of our country under Cameron, May, Johnson and now if they are lucky, themselves.

The bottom line is the Conservative Party are a wasteland devoid of ideas, beyond a form of reheated Thatcherism, to lead us out of the multiple crises we face. Get ready to hear a lot about tax cuts and a ‘War on Woke’ and absolutely nothing about concrete solutions to the crucial issues facing the country like the cost of living, the housing crisis, low productivity levels, or how to manage a rapidly ageing society.

Get ready to also hear a lot about how diverse the leadership race is – and admittedly there are a healthy mix of men and women from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Regardless of this, they are all university educated, middle class candidates from the South East who are all offering exactly the same Thatcherite political promises – not as diverse as they may seem.

This country needs bold transformational policies that will change the fortunes of those who have experienced nothing but a decline in their living standards for decades – this will not be coming from whoever the next Prime Minister is following this leadership election.
